SAVANNAH - Lea Lenger Winter, 98 passed away on January 29, 2010 in Savannah, Georgia after a long illness. Born in Beatrice, Nebraska, she graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Home Economics. She met her husband, Henry E Winter at UN. Their marriage lasted for 58 years until his death in 1993. Mrs. Winter raised the family in Venezuela where her husband worked for Creole ExxonMobil. They settled in Coral Gables, FL and later moved to Deland, FL. Mrs. Winter lived in Gainesville, FL before moving to Savannah, GA. Upon his retirement, they traveled the world. She was avid reader, enjoyed bridge and loved her cat, Tomas who preceded her in death by a matter of days. She was much loved and admired by all who knew her. She was a member of the Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons. Her philanthropic gifts supported research at the University of Florida Shands Cancer Center and a gift in memory of his husband established the Henry E Winter Engineering Assistance Fund at the University of Nebraska. She is survived by her five children Helen Terence Egan of McCormick, SC, Robert Denise Winter of La Grange, TX, Mary Peter Arnold of Dadeville, AL, Judy Stephen of Savannah, GA and David Patrice Winter of Topanga, CA, nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Oaks Health Center at the Marshes of Skidaway Island and the Odyssey Hospice team for their loving care of their mother. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, February 20 at the Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church at 5:00 pm. Remembrances may be sent to the Salvation Army.
